The Book Of Decks is a Classic Mac OS shareware deck-building assistant for Magic: The Gathering. Despite the mystical-sounding title, it is not a tarot tool: it lives in Info-Mac's game/crd (cards) category and helps Magic players plan, store, and refine the 60-card decks they take to kitchen-table and tournament play.
What it does
The application catalogs Magic cards and lets the player assemble named decks against that catalog, swap cards in and out, and save the resulting lists to disk. Reviewers at the time called it perhaps the best shareware deck-building assistant available for the game on the Mac platform.
Why Magic players used it
In the late-1990s Mac shareware scene, dedicated Magic tools were scarce and most players tracked decks on paper or in spreadsheets. The Book Of Decks gave them a purpose-built UI for the constructed-format workflow: a library, a deck pane, and quick edits in between.
Distribution
The release shipped as a BinHex archive (the-book-of-decks-251.hqx) on the Info-Mac archive under game/crd. It was distributed as classic Mac shareware, with a registration nag screen until the author's fee was paid.
This file is part of the MacTrove archive. See the Thank You page for the upstream mirrors we rely on. It is BinHex encoded — use The Unarchiver to decode it.
