Six Mots ("6Mots") is a bilingual French/English word guessing game for PowerMac by Belgian author Serge Louvet, distributed as Kagi-registered shareware in the Mac OS 8.6 era. The player must guess a hidden word of six to nine letters within a limited number of tries and under adjustable time pressure.
Concept and gameplay
Six Mots belongs to the Hangman / Mastermind-with-letters family rather than to crossword or anagram puzzles: pick a word length, get a fixed number of attempts, race a configurable timer, and narrow the answer down letter by letter. Both the interface and the dictionary are available in French and English.
Shareware terms
The unregistered version is functional indefinitely but locked to six-letter words; registering through Kagi unlocks word lengths up to nine letters. The author's pitch -- "you can use it for your whole life" in trial mode -- is unusually generous for the period and signals a freeware-leaning shareware model.
Engine and requirements
The build is PowerMac-only (no 68k fallback), needs around 4 MB of free memory, and was tested on Mac OS 8.6. It is distributed as a single BinHex archive, six-mots.hqx, in the Info-Mac game/word subtree.
