Etoile is a 1994 Classic Mac take on Chinese checkers from Japanese developer Michiko Osakabe, built as a gentle tribute to childhood games played with an older sister. The author's own dedication explains it best: a program made from sweet memories, offered in the hope that players would take a fancy to the same star-shaped board she grew up losing on.
The Game
Chinese checkers on a six-pointed star board, with pegs hopping across the field toward the opposite point. Simple rules, deep tactics, and a quiet pace suited to the System 7 desktop.
Author
Created by Michiko Osakabe and released in 1994. The accompanying note frames Etoile as a personal project rather than a commercial release.
Presentation
A clean board-game interface in the Classic Mac idiom, sized for the small color displays of the early-to-mid 1990s.
Preservation
Catalogued today on Macintosh Garden in the board game section, preserved for collectors of small, personal Mac shareware.
