Galactica is a 1997 Macintosh strategy game of galactic exploration and colonization by Ed Zavada and James Whitehouse. Players expand outward from a homeworld, claim planets, and contest rivals across the stars in a turn-based campaign. It supports multiplayer play either hot-seat on a single machine or networked through Mac OS file sharing.
Explore, Colonize, Conquer
The design slots into the lighter end of the 4X family that flowered around the same time as Master of Orion and Pax Imperia: a manageable galaxy map, planetary economies, fleet movement, and turn-by-turn diplomacy and warfare. The accessible scope made it popular with classic-Mac gamers who wanted strategy depth without a sprawling commitment.
System Requirements
Galactica 1.1.2 targets Mac OS 7.0 through 7.6 or Mac OS 9, on either 68k or PowerPC. It needs Color QuickDraw and at least 1 MB free RAM, with 256-color or better strongly recommended. QuickTime 2.0+ with MIDI support is used for the in-game music. It is not compatible with the Mac Plus, SE, Classic, Portable, or PowerBook 100.
Multiplayer Over AppleShare
One of the title's quietly clever features is its use of Mac OS file sharing as a transport for multiplayer turns, sidestepping the need for a dedicated network protocol. Players passed save files through a shared volume, allowing play across small office networks of the era.
Versions and Legacy
A later 3.0 release was issued as PowerPC-only and the project was eventually discontinued, but 1.1.2 remains the canonical Fat Binary build and is still emulated cleanly on SheepShaver and Basilisk II.
