Overload on Macintosh Garden corresponds to Sensory Overload, a 1994 first-person shooter from Reality Bytes. The player is an undercover CIA agent infiltrating BioTex Research Labs to expose the experiments of the rogue scientist Dr. Craven and his armed security force.
A pre-Doom Mac FPS
Released the same year as Marathon and Doom, Sensory Overload uses a textured raycaster to render corridors and labs in 256 colors at 640x480. It predates Bungie's release by a few months and is one of the earliest texture-mapped first-person shooters built natively for the Macintosh.
Gameplay loop
Levels are explored on foot, sweeping rooms for ammunition, medkits and keycards while dispatching guards, mutants and Craven's other creations. Security panels must be disabled to progress, weaving a light puzzle layer between the firefights.
System requirements
The minimum spec is a 68030 at 20 MHz with 2.5 MB of free RAM (2.8 MB to enable music), 8 MB of disk space and System 6.0.7 or later. A 13-inch color display at 256 colors is required; System 7 unlocks the soundtrack.
Reception and legacy
Reviews of the day praised the technology and atmosphere but criticized blocky enemy art and a thin plot. It remains a favorite of FPS historians as a snapshot of the genre on the Mac just before Marathon rewrote expectations.
