Flipper

Flipper is a freeware strategy board game for one or two players, written by Joe Strout (then at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio) and released as version 1.2 in January 1993. Its rules echo flipping-tile games found in arcades and home consoles, but with a configurable board and optional barriers that give each match its own character.

Gameplay

Players take turns placing pieces on a grid, flipping opposing tiles according to the game's rules. Either solo or two-player matches are supported, with the computer providing a credible opponent at either of two skill levels.

Customizable Board

The playfield is fully resizable, from 3 up to 11 squares in each dimension, with width and height set independently. Optional random barriers can be sprinkled across the board to break up sight lines and force fresh tactics.

AI

Two computer-opponent strengths are provided, both strong enough, the author notes, to defeat him in testing.

Distribution

Flipper 1.2 was released as freeware through the Info-Mac archive.
