Theldrow is a turn-based first-person RPG written in 1989 by Glenn Andreas, presented as a Sword Dream scenario by Comenius. Its interface and pixel art draw on the early Might and Magic generation, but its fantasy setting is original and its difficulty is famously steep, even by late-80s CRPG standards.
Design
The game uses a turn-based first-person viewport, with grid movement and combat resolved a step at a time. Original artwork was black-and-white to suit early compact Macs; later builds add a color version alongside the monochrome original.
Versions
Three builds are preserved on Macintosh Garden: v1.0 (155 KB), v2.2 (326 KB) bundled with a help file and the Mythologies documentation, and v2.3 (715 KB), the largest and latest. The 2.x line is the most playable for newcomers.
Platform
Theldrow targets 68k Macs running System 6.x through System 7.6 and runs cleanly under Mini vMac, the standard emulator for compact-Mac-era software.
Reception
The Macintosh Garden listing carries a 4.5/5 community rating across eight votes - high marks for an obscure 1989 freeware/shareware RPG that has survived primarily through enthusiast preservation.
