Playground is the shared scoreboard and bones-file directory used by NetHack 3.0 on the Macintosh. Distributed as a self-extracting archive (playground.sea) on the funet Mac mirror, it provides the supporting data area that the NetHack 3.0 patch level 10 binary expects to find when it launches.
Role in NetHack
In NetHack terminology, the "playground" is the directory containing record files, save files, and the bones levels that immortalize previous adventurers' deaths. Without it, the game cannot persist scores or share corpse levels between runs.
Distribution Format
The file ships as a Mac self-extracting archive (.sea), roughly 84 KB in size, that unpacks the required folders and stub files into place next to the NetHack application.
Companion to NetHack 3.0 pl10
The funet archive lists this file simply as "NetHack v3.0 pl 10 playground," pairing it with the contemporaneous Macintosh build of NetHack 3.0 patchlevel 10 from the early 1990s.
Preservation
The package is preserved here from the funet Mac games mirror as historical NetHack support material rather than a standalone game.
This file is part of the MacTrove archive. See the Thank You page for the upstream mirrors we rely on. It is a StuffIt/Compact Pro archive — use The Unarchiver to extract it.
