Unreal 1.0 is the original 1998 first-person shooter from Epic MegaGames, ported to the Macintosh by Westlake Interactive and published by MacSoft. Players awaken aboard the crashed prison ship Vortex Rikers on the alien world Na Pali, piecing together a story through translated text logs while battling the Skaarj.
Engine and presentation
Built on the first-generation Unreal Engine, the Mac release showcased colored lighting, curved surfaces, reflective floors, and a dynamic music system that shifted between exploration and combat tracks.
Weapons and combat
The arsenal of ten weapons each offered a primary and an alternate fire mode, including signature arms such as the Bio Rifle, Flak Cannon, ASMD Shock Rifle, and Razorjack.
Multiplayer modes
Bot-supported multiplayer covered deathmatch, team play, and DarkMatch, a variant fought in complete darkness where the muzzle flash of your own weapon was often the only available light source.
System requirements
The Mac edition required a PowerPC (603e/180 MHz or 604e/132 MHz minimum), 32 MB RAM (64 MB recommended), Mac OS 7.6 or later, and roughly 120 MB of hard disk space. The build was later carbonized to run on Mac OS X under Classic-compatible PPC systems.
