Delta Tao Software's Spaceward Ho! is the classic Macintosh 4X strategy game that drops you into a sprawling galaxy with one mandate: explore and colonize. First released in 1990 and patched through version 4.0.3 by 1995, it became a touchstone of streamlined empire-building on the Mac.
Galactic 4X, distilled
You guide a spacefaring civilization across a procedurally generated star map, scouting systems, planting colonies, and shepherding fleets. The design strips 4X strategy to its essentials: planets, ships, money, and metal, with no busywork between decisions.
Up to 20 opponents
Skirmishes scale from a quiet duel to a 20-way melee against computer rivals, each pursuing its own expansion. AppleTalk network play also let humans face off across the local network, which was a meaningful feature in the early 1990s.
Custom ship research
A research economy lets you push range, speed, weapons, shields, and miniaturization, then design custom hulls that suit your strategy, from cheap swarm scouts to capital warships.
Built for any Mac
Per the publisher, Spaceward Ho! runs on "any Macintosh with 1MB of memory running System 6.0.5 or greater," with color graphics on capable hardware. The 4.0.3 updater on the info-mac archive patches version 4.0.1 with bug fixes posted on behalf of Delta Tao.
