Galley was one of the multiplayer titles offered through Outland, the early online gaming service for Macintosh that operated in the mid-1990s and bundled a small library of network-playable games together with a graphical BBS-style community front end for its subscribers.
The Outland service
Outland packaged a curated set of multiplayer games behind a single client, including titles such as Spaceward Ho!, Chess, Reversi, Backstab, Hearts, and Galley, along with a graphical bulletin board for chat and community.
Networked play
Rather than shipping as a standalone product, Galley was distributed as part of the Outland install bundle, so players connected through the service to find opponents instead of arranging direct AppleTalk or modem matches themselves.
Historical context
Outland represented one of the first attempts to build a Mac-only commercial multiplayer gaming network, predating the broader move of Mac gaming onto the open Internet.
