733mhz in G4 QS 2002
I recently had a g4 quicksilver 2002 die on me. I thought it was the cpu, so I bought a 733 mhz on ebay for 15$. I'm still getting the same issue, and have ordered a new logic board. My question is if that 733mhz is compatible with the 2002. I hadn't realized this possible incompatibility before I bought it.
*I checked and they have the same L2 cache.
I just wanted to insure that my issue isn't still present b/c of an incompatible cpu(though seeing as I bought before I researched I guess it doesn't matter much)

The 733 (QS2001 CPU) has no cache (like the 800 in the 2002), they were the low end CPU's.
Why do you think it is the CPU that died? Most of these systems have Power Supply issues.

I thought mine was shot, held down the little button for 15 sec on the logic board and bam! |) worked. Did you try that already? probably did..
I think it is the cpu b/c it started smoking and sparks underneath itself and the logic board. Also one core warms up and the other does not(it was a dual). However, since a new cpu didn't fix it; I'm guessing it is the logicboard, so I've ordered a new one for 15$(<-GOOD DEAL) I'm also going in order of cost to replace: Cpu 15$, Logicboard 15$, PSU 219$
Yah, I've tried that, about 4 times.

New logic board did nothing. I'm now looking for a new PSU. /sigh
Those are expensive too.
You are better off getting a complete running QS then looking for a power supply. I have two QS's mostly because I want a spare for when my main one blows up. Propreitary power supplies suck, many otherwise working G4 towers will end up recycled because of the hard to find and pricey power supplies.
I got a PSU on ebay for a total of 36$ Wish me luck that it works
Well, the new psu works no different than the old one. So, with a new cpu, logic board, and psu I can't think of what else could be broken.
:scrambled: Alright, I'm lost.
It has a new logicboard, cpu, and psu. I've tried multiple ram sticks and removing the video card. I've tried with and without the hdd and the optical drives. I've tried resetting the pmu about 10 different times using 10 different methods. The new battery that came with the new logicboard was dead. I tried the old one(which still has some charge) and hotwiring 2 AA's, both to no avail.
What else even is there to possibly be broken?
Some info: Hit the power button button and it lights up then fades, red light on mobo stays lit, some fans spin slowly or spin up and down, no hdd activity.

And you did try to boot it with absolutely nothing other than the power cable plugged in(even PATA gets unplugged at the mobo)? Every card removed?(even RAM, but not CPU, that stays in
)
)
Everything, pata, airport(or not, looks to small), video card, ram
All out and still nothing. Only thing connected is psu, cpu, and the front analog board.
My "a certain eBay seller is about to deal with a very displeased customer" sense is tingling. :sadmac:
A question: What should this unit do with no cpu installed? In regards to lights and such?

With no CPU installed, the power light should illuminate as long as your finger is on it. No lights on the logic board, no fans.
With a bad or mismatched CPU, the power light should illuminate, the logic board LED should light and the fans should come on. It may or may not give a single beep tone.
The last thing you haven't replaced is the front panel switch. They do go bad.

Hmmm, mine is a conglomerate of those. Light illuminates as long as I hit it. The red mobo light does come on. Sometimes the fans spin a little bit, sometimes they don't. No beeping.
I bought a new PMU battery yesterday, maybe it will help(/doubt it)
Back the original point of the thread: Is it possible/likely that the 733mhz from a the Quicksilver '01 IS NOT compatible with the '02?

Simply pulling the battery should have the same effect as replacing it in regard to booting the machine. It's the "magic" way of reviving "dead" G4 Powermacs.
It was the MDD that broke compatibility, not the QS. You can use a CPU from a Sawtooth/GBE in a DA or QS even, but the bus speed will automatically be reduced.
I get an error beep if I try to use a Sawtooth single 400MHz in a 2002 Quicksilver. Don't quote me but I think only the DA and QS would be interchangeable.
Did you change the resistor settings when trying the Sawtooth CPU? If not then you'd be trying to run the400mhz processor at 533mhz which it likely won't do

I put a 400MHz GBE CPU into my DA, at first I changed the multiplier setting under the presumption that I needed to, but performance was really low so I bumped it up a couple times back to what it was originally and then it was fine. The mobo seemed to revert to 100MHz when it was installed so changing the resistors was underclocking it.
I will see if I can find screenies.
What ASP tells you is generally a lie when it comes to dinking around with CPUs.
*Edit
Actually, it looks like I was using my 450 Sawtooth CPU that I ran at 500, not the 400 GBE CPU around here.
Anyway:
Now, a little info, the lower speed benches are marked, as an example, DA600.450. This means DA is the system, ASP reports 600MHz and Gauge Pro reports 450MHz. I added the beige G3 result that macbench came with for comparison.
I suppose it is possible that the QS2002 can not take Sawtooth CPUs, but the DA and QS boards are so similar I would be surprised if that changed. I never tried it when I had a QS2002.

Ah, quite right! I had forgotten! IIRC, there is also an issue with the mounting screws, isn't there?Did you change the resistor settings when trying the Sawtooth CPU? If not then you'd be trying to run the400mhz processor at 533mhz which it likely won't do
Well, the guy I bought the psu from is sure it is working. He is sending me a new logicboard for shipping to help see if we can't get it working. :quadra:
I'm betting on the old psu fried my first new lb. Old psu ain't getting anywhere near this new lb. }
It's one thing to find mac enthusiasts here, it is another to find them on eBay.

Second new lb arrived today. Now hopefully, at least one of my cpus is good.
I popped in the new lb, and the 733 mhz cpu. It actually sustained the power button light and was working.(No chime, but that was b/c of no ram) I grabbed a fresh RAM chip, popped it in and DEATH! It is now back to its old symptoms(and this is with a confirmed working psu AND lb). Is it possible a bad RAM stick killed the lb?
Assuming the RAM stick didn't kill the board(There was no smoke, no pop, no spark, no nothing...) and I merely got lucky and got one boot out of a dead cpu/front analog board. I am looking for a (third)new cpu and a front analog board. If anyone has these handy, let me know. Though, I think it is the cpu based on the symptoms: With no cpu it behaves as it should, and with the cpu it shows the signs of a bad cpu minus the power light staying on.

The new lb that arrived appears to be that of an original QS. I say this because it was stated by the seller that it has the 128gb HDD limitation. Would a Dual 1 ghz cpu work on this lb? I intend to get a 733 off of eBay for 8$, but am wondering if it will be possible to take it back up to where it was.
any 466/533/733/800/933/1ghz... anything with a 133mhz FSB from a DA, or QS should work without issue. With no ram installed, you should get 3 beeps at power on. concur with the other posters statement of what happens when CPU not in - maybe it's not seated well? Good luck... : )
That is odd, the one time it did boot on what I believe is a bad cpu, it didn't beep at all. Also, good to know the dual 1ghz will work.
Just kidding, in last resort, try this :

Joke appart,
Sounds like a PSU issue to me (but can go wrong)
Can you have it tested with a voltmeter ?
As the LB requires a trickle power of +25V to boot ...maybe this is missing.

Also, are you sure the CPU is fully seated in the socket.
