It's a Hitachi Ultrastar IC35L073UCDY1. I have tried either and both "Force SE" and "Disable Parity" and neither - no effect. I have not tried Unit Attention yet, nor have I tried the what I assume is wide negotiation (? TI SYNC NEGO ?). The documentation I found said it's compatible with G3/G4, but I'm not too familiar with SCSI on those machines.

This was intended for a standard 50-pin Power Mac 7100. I tried both of the two adapters I have for 80- to 50-pin. Also important to note I have an Apple CD 300plus in there - or whatever the stock drive is called. The CD drive is jumpered with ID 3, Parity, and Termination Power

The Ultrastar drive has a bunch of jumper options but I'll omit the IDs etc.

FORCE SE

DISABLE UNIT ATTN

TI SYNC NEGO

DISABLE PARITY

DELAY START 6 / 12

AUTO START DELAY

DISABLE AUTO SPIN

I need to sort of do a DOA test on this one versus whether it's just not compatible.

What adapters are you using? do they terminate all 16 data lines on the SCA hdd? Allot of adapters don't do this and allot of drives won't work without all the data lines terminated

I honestly don't know. Can I use a 50-pin passthrough terminator?

I have two adapters but I wasn't using any options on either. If I understand at all, I would probably have to jumper the termination pins on the adapter, no?

Well it depends, some drives work with just the 8 lines on the 50 pin connector jumpered, some don't. But it's always worth trying one of the pass through terminators if you have one

Is you adapters one of the £2 Chinese ones? Those have no termination at all (the TP jumper simply supplys termination power to the bus)

I'm using 2 more or less cheap possibly Chinese adapters, but I've never used any of the settings on either of them (always on the drives). [However, I've never actually gotten a drive to work with either of them - I actually may be able to use the adapter even more passively - setting up a 50-to-80 to 80-to-50 pin adapter so that I can actually test the adapters on a known working drive. But I can't believe it's both of the different ones I have and not the drives (they always power up fine). I'll work on this over the next week or so.]

SCA drives do not have any built in termination, you either need a terminated adapter or a external terminator. Try that pass through, i might just get it working

It's in the mail. Is this drive SCA? I know the 68pin one I tried is and thus had no termination.

SCA drives are the 80 pin ones, the 68 pin ones are not SCA drives. I'm not sure if the 68pin drives are terminated or not (i'm pretty sure at least some are)

If the 80-pin SCA drives are anything like the 68-pin drive I have in my 8600, you have to terminate the upper 8-bits of the wide SCSI bus, this is usually labelled Upper Byte Termination on adapters that have it. Plus you will need a 50pin pigtail terminator on the internal bus, using the CD-ROM drive as a bus terminator will not work. While it shouldn't be needed, jumper FORCE SE and make sure it is assigned a SCSI ID between 0 and 6.

Oh ok (to SCA). I tried Force SE but I haven't assigned any ID'S yet. Will try tonight. I had a jumper shortage until this afternoon.

Ok. I very methodically tried a bunch of jumper options - none of which worked - before reading your messages more carefully. I'll be waiting on the passthrough terminator, then. But it is confounding to me why the CD 300 Plus would work when there's also no termination. It's supplying termination power to the bus but there's no actual termination on the chain - as I understand it.

Scsi is a strange beast. Some devices work with no termination, most don't (and those that do might not work reliably )

I'll also mention that I make terminated SCA to 50 pin scsi adapters, uniserver should have a stock of them if he has found the time to sort a small manufacturing problem he encountered

They terminate all 16 bits on the sca drive so allow a bigger selection of drives to be used than the passive adapter + pass through terminator option

The 50pin passthrough is already in the mail (I actually meant to buy it weeks ago). I don't know much about this or the other (Compaq 9.1gb) drive but if the passthrough doesn't work I'll hit up Uniserver. Thanks.
