The Burning of Eden 2 is an 18-level fan-made scenario for Bungie's original Marathon, built by brothers Matt and Ed Schenk (credited as MaEd) and released through Info-Mac. It is one of the few large-scale total conversions ever produced for the Marathon 1 engine and requires the commercial game to play.
A scenario for Marathon 1
Where most ambitious Marathon mods targeted Marathon 2 or Infinity, Burning of Eden stayed loyal to the first game's engine. The package is not a standalone title; you need a working copy of Bungie's Marathon 1 in order to load the scenario.
Eighteen handcrafted levels
The scenario weaves together 18 single-player levels with original artwork, an elaborate plotline, three-way fights between factions, environmental puzzles, and gloomy basement sections. The Schenks describe it as the product of 'many hundreds of hours of youthful enthusiasm.'
Version 2 improvements
Version 2 supersedes the original Burning of Eden release in the archives. It adds 11 new network maps, expands ammo placements, layers in additional secrets, and corrects a range of bugs reported by players of the first version.
Distribution
The mod was distributed as a BinHex archive (burning-of-eden-20.hqx) on Info-Mac and shared from the authors' Saint Joseph's College page, the standard delivery channel for Marathon community content in the late 1990s.
This file is part of the MacTrove archive. See the Thank You page for the upstream mirrors we rely on. It is BinHex encoded — use The Unarchiver to decode it.
