Wolfenstein 3D: First Encounter is the 1994 Macintosh shareware release of id Software's landmark first-person shooter, distributed on the Mac by MacPlay. The download contains the first three levels of the full retail title, giving 68k System 6 through Mac OS 9 owners a free taste of the corridor combat that defined the genre.
Shareware Slice
The First Encounter package ships with the opening three maps of the commercial Wolfenstein 3D, the same content id Software used to seduce DOS players into buying the larger episodes. A registration dialog inside the game points buyers toward the paid Second and Third Encounters.
Engine and Feel
Wolfenstein 3D popularized the raycast first-person view: textured walls, sprite enemies, and tight orthogonal corridors. The Macintosh build retains that look and adds higher-resolution title and difficulty screens tuned for color Macs.
Compatibility
The application is 68k native and runs from System 6.x through Mac OS 9. Modern users can boot it inside SheepShaver or Basilisk II for emulated play.
