Haunted Castle is a fan-made scenario for the Macintosh release of Wolfenstein 3D rather than a stand-alone game. It was built with WolfEdit, the third-party level editor written by Greg Ewing, and ships as a level pack that loads on top of an existing copy of the engine.
A Wolfenstein 3D scenario
The download replaces the standard episode content with a custom "haunted castle" themed map set, played from inside the original Mac Wolfenstein 3D engine. All gameplay, weapons and enemy behaviour are inherited from the host game.
Built with WolfEdit
The scenario was authored in Greg Ewing's WolfEdit, the de facto level editor for Macintosh Wolfenstein. WolfEdit is what made fan scenarios like this one possible on the Mac side, where the official PC mod tools never shipped.
Engine compatibility
The author states that Haunted Castle can be loaded either by the free shareware release commonly known as 3rd Encounter or by the full commercial version of Wolfenstein 3D for the Macintosh. A working install of one of those is required - the scenario is not a complete game on its own.
Installation note
Because Haunted Castle is a data pack and not an executable, players need to install it into their existing Wolfenstein 3D folder following the conventions of WolfEdit-built scenarios.
