The Path to Fortune is Volume One of The Windhall Chronicles, a parser-driven text adventure designed by Jeff Cassidy and co-written and programmed by C.E. Forman using Inform 5.5. Distributed in 1995-1996 as a Mac interpreter bundle, it carried a $10 shareware request for maps and an Infocom-style hint book.
The Windhall Chronicles
Path to Fortune is positioned as the opening volume of a planned series, with the donation drive explicitly framed as funding for future Windhall Chronicles entries rather than payment for the game itself.
Engine and tooling
The game was authored in Infocom-style Inform 5.5 (Release 3, serial 960118, Inform v1502 Library 5/11) and ships as a Macintosh Z-machine interpreter wrapper, making the same world playable in any Inform interpreter on other platforms via the if-archive at ftp.gmd.de.
Shareware and extras
The game itself is freely distributable for non-commercial use; the $10 shareware fee unlocks a complete map set and a hint book modeled on Infocom's Invisiclues, complete with trick questions and a list of fun things to try in-game. The hint materials themselves are not redistributable.
System requirements
The Mac build requires System 7 and at least 1.6 MB of free memory; users on earlier system software or non-Mac platforms are pointed at the if-archive for alternative interpreters.
