Woden is a 1996 vertically scrolling arcade shoot-em-up for the Macintosh by Yuuki Hashimoto. The player flies the spacecraft Woden upward through stages packed with enemy waves, culminating in oversized boss encounters that gave the game its reputation for steep difficulty among classic Mac shmup fans.
Gameplay
Standard top-scrolling shooter mechanics: dodge bullet patterns, sweep enemy formations, and chip away at the stage boss until it explodes to advance. Hashimoto leans into bullet-heavy boss fights rather than long stages, so each screen demands tight movement and pattern recognition.
Audio and Style
Woden is remembered for its punchy chip-style soundtrack and crisp pixel art. The visual palette favors dark space backdrops with bright sprites, keeping enemy fire readable against the scroll.
System Requirements
The game targets a PowerPC 601 or later under Mac OS 7.1 or newer, asks for about 5.3 MB of RAM, and supports 256-color or 16-bit color displays. Players on slower hardware are advised to drop to 16 grays for a smoother frame rate.
Heritage
Woden is one of a handful of mid-1990s Japanese-authored Macintosh shooters that circulated through international BBS and FTP channels. It survives today largely through Macintosh Garden and remains a worthwhile time capsule of independent Mac shmup design.
