About

Barrack Banner Replacement is a small player-made modification for Ambrosia Software's 1996 arcade game Barrack, created by Steven Marcotte (sdoran@cis.ksu.edu). Using Photoshop and ResEdit, the author moved the in-game title banners so that each label sits directly above the information it describes, smoothing out a layout quirk in the original release.

What it changes

The patch repositions the on-screen banner graphics that label score, lives, level and similar HUD elements. Marcotte noted that after a month of play he kept getting tripped up by the original placement, so the mod nudges every title up above the value it is associated with for a more readable scoreboard.

About the parent game

Barrack is one of Ambrosia Software's classic arcade releases, written by Greg Lovette in 1996. Players draw barriers across a playfield to subdivide it into smaller and smaller sections while avoiding a swarm of bouncing balls, drawing inspiration from JezzBall and Qix.

How it is installed

The download is distributed as a BinHex (.hqx) archive named NewBarrackBanner. The replacement resources are dropped into the Barrack application using ResEdit; users are advised to keep a backup copy of the original Barrack file before swapping the banner artwork.

Compatibility

Because it is a resource patch for the original 68k/PowerPC Barrack, the mod inherits Barrack's requirements: System 7.0-7.6 or Mac OS 9, on either a 68k Macintosh or a Power Macintosh.
