ScanMon is a late-90s Mac shareware joke program by Jason Rainbows' Magic Theatre that pretends to turn your monitor into a flatbed scanner. The bit lands when you ignore the on-screen warnings and place your hand against the glowing scan area, triggering a startling gag designed to make a friend jump.
The Gag
You tell a victim that you have new software that can scan an image using the monitor itself as the scanner. ScanMon then performs a convincing illusion of a scan happening on screen. After the demonstration you announce you will scan your own hand, ignore the warnings about putting fingers near the scan area, and press the Scan Button.
What Happens Next
According to the author, what follows is sheer terror, but only the prankster knows the secret. The piece is designed as a single-shot setup-and-payoff joke rather than a game with goals or scoring.
Cautions
The accompanying notes warn, mostly in jest, against using ScanMon near people with heart conditions, in mental institutions, or around children under six. The README treats the disclaimer itself as part of the comedy.
System Requirements
A color Macintosh and, in the author's words, a sense of humor. Distributed as version 1.07 via Info-Mac and Kagi-style shareware channels.
