Gerbils Tracks is a small pack of three custom roller-coaster tracks for Apple's Gerbils, the QuickDraw 3D demo authored by Pangea Software and shipped by Apple Computer in 1995. Built by user thewaug, the set bundles courses called Iron Maiden, Barf-o-Matic, and Lucifer's Playground for the original gerbil-powered ride simulator.
About the host program
Apple's Gerbils! demo was originally written for Apple to showcase QuickDraw 3D, presenting itself as a rollercoaster simulator powered by gerbils running through 3D track segments. It runs on PowerPC Macs from System 7 through Mac OS 9 with QuickDraw 3D installed.
What is in the pack
The download contains three user-designed track files. To try them, launch Gerbils, choose Open from the File menu, and pick Iron Maiden, Barf-o-Matic, or Lucifer's Playground. Each loads as a self-contained ride for the simulator to render.
System requirements
The file's BinHex notes call out System 7.6 as the required environment, matching the era when QuickDraw 3D shipped widely with the Mac OS. A PowerPC Mac with QuickDraw 3D is needed, since the Gerbils application itself depends on it.
Why it is interesting
The pack is a small example of community content for a first-party Apple tech demo, the kind of low-stakes user creation that circulated via Info-Mac alongside the official Apple package.
