Dead End is Wolfgang Thaller's block-pushing maze puzzler for the Macintosh, later expanded into DeadEnd 3D. The player navigates stone-walled mazes by shoving massive blocks out of the way to clear a path to the exit, but a single block pushed in the wrong direction can permanently seal the way out.
Gameplay
Each level is a self-contained maze in which movement and block-shoving are the only tools. Solutions hinge on planning the order in which blocks are pushed, since misplaced stones cannot be pulled back.
DeadEnd 3D
The 3D follow-up rebuilds the experience around hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics and adds a true third axis of movement, while still bundling the original two-dimensional levels for players who want the classic puzzles.
System requirements
DeadEnd 3D requires Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X with hardware-accelerated OpenGL (Rage Pro or better). The original 2D Dead End is offered as a fallback for older machines that cannot meet those requirements.
Distribution
Released as shareware (EUR 15 / USD 15) but fully functional in unregistered form, with the original 2D version available free from the author's website.
