MacChess is a solid native Macintosh chess program by Wim van Beusekom, distributed in both English and Dutch language versions. Releases span versions 2.0 through 5.0.1, supporting both 68k and PowerPC Macs running Mac OS 7 or later on a 68020 or better processor. It has been verified on hardware ranging from the IIsi and Centris 610 up through Power Mac systems.
Gameplay and engine
MacChess plays a full game of chess against a built-in engine with adjustable strength, exposing the standard Mac controls for new game, undo, hint, and board flip through ordinary menus. The program is positioned as a serious play partner rather than a casual toy, and it has been a long-running fixture of the Macintosh Garden chess shelf.
Languages and localization
The author ships parallel English and Dutch builds, reflecting MacChess's roots in the Dutch Mac shareware scene. Menu text and prompts are localized; the underlying engine is identical across languages.
System requirements
A 68020 or later CPU and Mac OS 7 are the floor, with PowerPC-native builds available in the later 4.x and 5.x releases. The application is small and has modest memory needs, making it suitable for the full range of color-capable classic Macs.
Sibling note
MacChess is distinct from the separately archived "Mac Chess" entry; the two are independent programs that share a generic name. Garden's catalog keeps both side by side under slightly different slugs.
