NetLuff is a small networked board game for the classic Mac, submitted to Info-Mac as version 1.4 by Henrik Linder. As the author puts it in the original upload note, it is a game for playing Five-in-a-row over the Internet - a Mac-native take on the traditional Gomoku or renju puzzle, with two players connecting their machines to compete live.
The game
Five-in-a-row is played on a grid: players take turns placing stones, and the first to line up five of their own colour horizontally, vertically or diagonally wins. The rules are simple, but the strategic depth has kept variants of the game popular for centuries.
Networked play
NetLuff's distinguishing feature is that it carries the contest across a network connection, letting two Mac users sit at separate machines and play in real time - a notable touch for a piece of mid-1990s shareware.
Origin
The submission came from Henrik.Linder@mbox300.swipnet.se via the Info-Mac archive as netluff-14.hqx, placing the release in the era when SwipNet was a common Swedish dial-up provider.
