XM Radio is quite awesome
I installed a Delphi SkyFi XM radio unit in my car last weekend. If you are skeptical about sattelite radio at all, I highly recommend checking it out a bit more. If you are thinking about getting it at all, just get it! You will love it.

I had to make a small bracket to mount the unti on my dash. I made the bracket at work and used velcro to attach the Delphi Skyfi unit to the bracket and the bracket to the dashboard. The Grand Am interior does not have very many places to mount the unit without losing something such as storage or one of the air vents. In the end I decided blocking the middle vent was the lesser of two evils as there are two more vents beside it. The ventilation system for this car is very powerfull and the vent really wasn't needed. The Skyfi's display color matches Pontiac's dashboard lights perfectly. I mounted the antenna on the trunk and it works great. On my 65 mile drive to work I don't have a single drop out. I only drive through one town with a repeater.
I can make this bracket for any one who is interested. $35 shipped.

I disagree. You have to PAY. To listen to the f*cking radio. That's the dumbest thing ever. I'll just wait until I can get quasi-broadband in the car, and tune into www.di.fm and listen to great music completley free.
XM and Sirious are the RIAA and car manufacturers idea of tricking consumers into paying to LISTEN to music... hell, you don't even own it! Secondly, there'd be a lot more GOOD local radio stations if the Gov weren't such pricks about getting a broadcasting license.. oh yeah, you can broadcast your own radio station, if it has a truly pathetic range.

Screw XM and the other one, I'll listen to music that I PAID for, and can listen to as many times as I want, or I'll listen to the FREE radio stations.

I pay $40 a month for cable TV that I watch a total of 3 hours a week. I drive over 2 hours a day and listen to the radio in my car for over 14 hours a week. Why in the hell do I pay for cable TV?!? I also own over 300 CDs because the radio stations suck around here. I used to buy a new CD every couple weeks. In the past week I haven't listened to a single CD. I will probably buy a lot less CDs now that I don't need to. Plus the ability to listen to Fox News and CNN is very nice during this war.
I don't see the radio stations changing for the better around here. in my area I have 5 rap/hip-hop/pop station, 5 country stations, and 5 NPR stations. I prefer modern rock and punk. Can't hear that on the radio around here. I would pay $30 for sattelite radio if I had to now that I have it. Worth EVERY single penny. I guess you just don't understand.

I do understand. You're paying money to listen to music you don't own, and you spend a lot of time in your car. Here's a better idea. QUIT PAYING FOR CABLE, and purchase a new stereo for your car that can play MP3 CDs. Up to 10 hours of music on ONE cd. And it's all YOUR music. Just think, on a cross country road trip you'd need less than 10 CDs. easy.

get a cd changer or a mp3 cd player and play music that you OWN! invest that money in your favorite artists instead of some soon to go out of business satelite radio company.

Dude, I would SO do that (ipod) but there's no clean way to integrate the iPod into a car stereo. Sure, you can hook the audio out from the iPod into a stereo.... but I'd like some sort of 'remote control' feature, a DIN sized 'reciever' for the iPod. What you'd do, is transfer songs to your ipod, walk to your car, get in, and you'd see something that looked a lot like a regular CD player... then you'd hit a button, the face would flip DOWN, and you'd be able to SHOVE the ENTIRE IPOD into the stereo. It would flip back up, and your iPod would be playing your music, displaying your ID3 tags, and get this: It'd ALSO be charging! How f*cking cool would that be? You hear me apple? Team up with Harmon Kardon and make a kickass iPod stereo for the car, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

I enjoy listening to the radio in the car instead of cds. That way I get to hear _new_ stuff and find more music that I like. Having driven cross-country a number of times I definitely understand what makes XM radio desirable. Being able to always find a radio station that plays music I like and not having to deal with commercials might even make it worth the cost if I drove more often.
I love XM Radio. And I love to record it on my Mac and score lots of cheap music that way.

No thanks, I'd much prefer to have BUTTONS designated in one spot, that way while I'm driving I can reach down, hit the right one, and not have to take my eyes off the road. my car came with XM installed in the dashboard by the factory.. I like it a lot better than buying CDs, or spending hours trying to pirate stuff off of Limewire. Don't let these jealous people detract from your enjoyment of XM..
I'm not jealous. The fact that you PAY for it makes it retarded. If you could get monkeyradio in your car, cool as hell. If you could get di.fm in your car, even better. But if I'm PAYING for a connection in my car, I better have an RJ45 outlet right next to my cigarette lighter.

What's retarted about paying for a convenient service? The cost-effective method of pirating music, mixing songs, and burning CDs is too much of a hassle for some people. It takes me forever to download songs on Limewire, and I'm terrible at making good mixes. Add that to the fact that I travel a lot and hate searching for new radio stations all the time. XM may not be suited for you, but that doesn't make it retarded..

Exactly. Saying "but you have to PAY for it" makes it sound like it's a major monthly expense.

10 dollars a month for commercial free radio? and way more variety than your average radio dial? im in my car like 1.5 hours a day and i think about getting it sometimes.

I've thought about getting that installed in my work van, the iPod is nice, but i don't have but about 300 songs or so. Being gone a week or so from home, the iPod's selection starts to get kinda blah

At $10 a month, paying for 101 channels or nearly commercial free and in the case of 30 music channels totally commercial free programming is a STEAL!
You guys have no idea what it is all about until you try it.
As $10 a month (and only $7 for additional subscribtions), its actually cheaper than wasting your time and efforts on downloading and burning CD's every day or every week to get that variety you may want.
I invite you to read up on this service on www.xmfan.com before you rush to judgement.

I can put an iPod in my car and listen to CD-quality audio - 20 gigabytes worth - over 4000 songs - on random play - with one device. I can change the song/artist/album/genre on a whim.

That's the problem.. its a hassle for some people to play DJ, so why not pay someone else to do it for you? I don't want to sit around all day downloading new songs and burning them and changing out the CDs in my car just so that I can have a little variety.. its a waste of time.

Plus I get the weather, news and comedy. And if I need to, I still have my CD player and AM/FM stations to listen to. But I haven't listened to a minute of AM or FM and I listened to about 15 minutes of one CD since installing the XM unit. Believe it or not, I would probably get bored with the same 4,000 songs on my iPod if I had one.

Nice work. Plus, with XM it's live and current. I have both iPod and XM, but I use XM a LOT more, in the car and at home. About the only time I use my iPod is when I am away from my XM radio.

I understand where you're coming from Ca$h but there's a f**k of a lot more to XM than just the music.
There's ESPN radio, news stations, comedy stations, and other programming that you just can't get.
I live right outside of Philly and drive home to visit friends in Upstate NY on a regular basis. I have XM in my SUV because I can listen to the football / baseball games the whole way. I don't have to play the scan game every couple of miles.

if you feel that the otherwise unattainable programming is worth it...then it is.
i would love to listen to Mark Prior pitch every once in awhile and there is basically nowhere i can get that. just for music though i still stand by my original comments - invest in your fav artists cd and don't let the media dictate what is good new music.
